Disposable vapes have made a huge impact in the market recently. They have consistently increased the sales of e-cigarettes by up to 60%, further slowing down the sales of open system vapes. Even the studies show that there has been a rise in the number of vape manufacturers and brands in the industry. We are aware of the present and can even predict the future of vaping devices, but do we know enough about its past? Let’s find out.
Disposable vapes are not the newbies to this industry. They have been in existence for over 10 years now. However, they weren’t popular at that time. What was well-known in the past were the large mechanical vapes, the open pods, or the pod mods.
It was in 2015 when an American e-cigarette brand named JUUL entered the market. The company introduced a closed pod system and within 3 years, it managed to take over about half of the entire e-cigarette industry. In 2018, Altria Group acquired it with a value of about $12.8 billion and became the legend of the vape industry. But with this success, soon came a downfall.
JUUL was getting too popular among the teenagers of the country. The cases of JUUL addiction were rising rapidly. Considering this, the Trump government banned all the fruit flavors from JUUL, allowing only mint and tobacco to be sold. But this too had a loophole.
The ban established by the government failed to mention that the ban was on disposable vapes and their fruit flavors. But people were still under the impression that JUUL was banned. This was where a new brand found an empty spot in the industry and stepped in.
A new e-cigarette brand named Puffbar quickly gained everyone’s attention and became popular. The products launched by this new brand were no different than JUUL’s. Their main target group was American teenagers. The government tried to ban 10 fruit flavors of JUUL but Puffbar came up with 30 fruit flavors! In 2019 itself, the country observed a rise in the number of vapers which was 4 million!
Within no time, Puffbar gained immense popularity and began shipping 700,000 pieces a day! This was the peak sale time for the company but it didn’t last long. In 2020, the FDA again banned all 30 fruit flavors from Puffbar.
Now, Puffbar wasn’t going to sit back and watch other companies grow. They came up with synthetic e-liquid to escape the FDA policies. This was a smart move and several smaller companies followed this. But there are still a few brands like Hyde disposable vape that sell fruit flavors. It seems the government only targets popular brands.
